Growing up in the Antipodes can be a boundless thing. As isolated as our homes are, other landscapes appear infinite in possibility as do the horizons that surround them. And as much as we spend our younger years desperate for escape, always looking outwards, it is often our adventures around the world that lead us back to where those dreams began, our home and our travels mixing, creating narratives of who we once were and who we have become.

After years embedded in New York working as a merchandiser, marketer, public relations consultant and designer in the haze of luxury fashion, EX INFINITAS designer LUKAS VINCENT found himself back home living in the suburbs of Australia, starting at ground zero to begin his own label. And it was the subculture of his teenage years, living in a small beach town in coastal Victoria that he began to look at with new eyes, arousing him to tap into its spirit of youth; a patchwork of commission flats and joint-rolling surfers. Determined to present his native narrative of Australian anti-fashion to a Parisian audience, Vincent has used his international networks and expertise to launch his label. His surf-dandy streetwear, beautifully tailored in Italian fabrics has been embraced by international markets and exhibited in artfully shot films.

Former vice-president of COMMES des GARÇONS in New York, TONY NEWSHAM, sits down with Vincent in Melbourne, who earlier this year was the clear winner of the men’s WOOLMARK prize, to talk about the rough boys and kings of nowhere behind his label’s inspiration.
