On the Southbank of the River Tees in the North-East of England lies the industrial town of Middlesbrough. Renowned for its steel works, its football club and its parmo, this forgotten facet of North Yorkshire is being reimagined by its emerging youth. Where once thriving factories offered opportunity, now weeds and wildflowers grow in their wake. But despite or perhaps because of the town’s neglect, a flourishing subculture engulfs its young. Nights spent seshing, give way to days spent fiending on techno, art, and swapping trainers and links to mixes.

Fascinated by the casualty of the town and its inhabitants, Polish photographer Kuba Ryniewicz photographed his friends and North Yorkshire natives Harry and Ethan in its surrounds. The duo wear Harry’s post-industrial streetwear, designed for his final year university project – high-vis jumpers and caps, overalls and all-in-one worker’s uniforms. The clothes are a modern-day homage to factory workers and yet look just as right when worn out partying, encapsulating Harry’s intention of creating clothes that promote the “work hard play hard” aesthetic of his hometown.

Ryniewicz captures the beauty of an environment in a state of flux, and its bright young things in their natural, industrial environment.
